My mom recently had a 4 day stay at SOMC.
During her admission, they were discussing her medications. She told them she had a list and they respond they didn’t need it. I arrive on day 3 of her stay. She tells me they had not been giving her the Prozac she needed for her nerves. She had taken this medication for years. Not something you can just stop taking cold turkey.
She was experiencing withdrawals such as headaches and anxiety attacks. On day 3 they placed her on oxygen. She was experiencing an anxiety attack and the hospitalist had been called/text 2 times. I finally took it upon myself to just get her own prescription and give her that medication.
Next, day 4, they’re going to release her! I know she can’t breathe but not understanding why. They have the respiratory test and respiratory says she would qualify for oxygen at home. Oh, but wait, there’s no respiratory diagnosis. So, no oxygen as Medicare won’t cover it without the diagnosis.
Then, we get home and she informs me that they weren’t giving her a water pill she was prescribed. She weighed herself. She had gained 12 pounds in 4 days being on a liquid diet! It was all fluid. She took one water pill and has already lost 2 pounds.
I was fighting for them to keep her afraid she wasn’t ready to come home. Little did I realize is that the hospital is what she needed to be saved from. She was supposed to be there for them to “care” for her not almost kill her!
