A strange sequence of events kept Portsmouth police hopping with calls involving a possible drug-fueled panic and an unprovoked sidewalk assault — both with suspects who vanished before officers could catch up.
Just before 5 p.m., police were called to Bob Evans on Gallia Street after a man reportedly ran into the restaurant claiming he was being chased by two men. Staff told officers the man appeared to be under the influence of drugs. Before police arrived, the man took off, and no suspects or alleged pursuers were located.
Roughly an hour later, things got weirder.
An individual contacted police from the area of 17th and Kendall, reporting that a man had approached them on the sidewalk and suddenly punched them. The caller declined medical attention and officers searched the area but couldn’t locate the victim or the assailant.
Later, the same victim called back from Hisle Park Apartments, where officers were finally able to meet with them and take a report for assault.
A String of Strange — But Not Uncommon — Calls
While these incidents may sound unusual, officers say calls involving erratic behavior, substance use, and random assaults are more common than many realize—especially when drugs or mental health issues are in play.
Anyone who experiences or witnesses unpredictable or aggressive behavior is encouraged to call 911 and stay in a safe location until police arrive. Even if the person leaves before help shows up, your report could help prevent a more serious incident down the line.
