What started as a routine tax return has turned into an ongoing problem for employees at a Portsmouth tax office.
Police were called to the H&R Block on Scioto Trail after workers reported a man repeatedly coming in and causing a scene. According to employees, the man had his taxes done there—and didn’t like the outcome.
Instead of accepting it, they say he’s been showing up at random times demanding to see the employee who prepared his return. Each visit has gotten more aggressive. At one point, he reportedly threw his driver’s license across the counter. Another time, he showed up right at closing and went off on the employee trying to lock up for the night.
Workers told officers they’re now genuinely afraid of what he might do next.
Police advised employees to call immediately if he returns so he can be formally trespassed from the property—meaning if he comes back after that, he could be arrested.
💡 WHAT’S REALLY GOING ON WHEN YOU “OWE” TAXES
Let’s clear something up, because this situation happens every single year.
👉 The tax office didn’t “do this” to him
👉 They’re just entering the numbers and following the law
If you owe money, it usually comes down to:
- Not enough taxes taken out during the year
- Changes in income
- Fewer credits than expected
It’s frustrating, no doubt. But the person behind the desk isn’t the one sending the bill.
What a tax preparer can do:
- Walk you through your return
- Check for mistakes
- Help you understand payment options
What they can’t do:
- Change what you owe
- Make a tax bill disappear
Bottom line—bad tax news happens. Losing your temper over it doesn’t fix the problem, but it can create a whole new one.
