A man randomly opened fire, sending a bullet into his neighbor’s house, and he didn’t stop shooting even when deputies arrived to investigate.
Officers got a call around 3 pm from residents who said a bullet had come through their wall.
When a deputy arrived on the scene at the Proctorville home, they heard gunshots whistling nearby as they spoke to the homeowner. The officer advised the homeowner to take cover while they determined where the shots were coming from.
The officer tracked down where the shots were coming from and saw someone shooting from a second-story window and shell casings dropping to the ground.
The officers knocked on the door, and a man opened the door and let him in. Once inside, the deputy spotted a man sitting at a table holding a rifle near an open window.
The deputy told the man to put down the rifled, and he complied.
When the deputy spoke to the pair, they said they were just sighting their rifles by shooting into the woods and hadn’t realized they’d shot into anyone’s home. Officers noted they’d managed to hit their own home and found numerous shell casings in the yard.
The deputy then headed back to the home that had been hit and saw a bullet lying on the kitchen floor.
Officers gave both the shooters a lecture on weapons safety and forwarded their information to the Lawrence County Prosecutor’s Office.
