A local man contacted deputies to report he’d fallen victim to an online scam and sent almost $10,000 to someone he thought was billionaire Elon Musk.
It all started when someone messaged him on Twitter a few weeks ago, claiming to be Elon Musk. He said the man sent him a copy of his driver’s license and his business checking account.
He requested money for an investment, so the man sent money from his bank account, PayPal, and even took out cash advances to the man as well as allowed him access to his computer and PayPal account.
Officers advised him to change all of the passwords on his devices and accounts. He admitted that he’d been scammed before.
Woman Scammed Over the Phone
A local woman fell for a common phone scam. She told officers that someone claiming to work for PayPal called her and told her she owed PayPal $54.
The caller talked the woman into going to stores and buying $500 worth of gift cards. The woman then gave the redemption codes to the scammer.
However, she realized she had been scammed and called officers. Unfortunately, once gift cards have been redeemed, they are untraceable.
