Matthew Grant Fox, of Greensboro, North Carolina, died March 31, 2025 of pneumonia and respiratory failure exacerbated by his muscular dystrophy.
Born in New York City, NY on September 16, 1969 and raised in Greenwich, CT, Matt attended The Fessenden School, graduated from Westtown School in 1988 and graduated from the University of North Carolina Greensboro.
Matt made Greensboro his adopted hometown, but also traveled while his health permitted it. During his life he went to the Caribbean, Europe and Africa, as well as Australia and San Salvador (with an accidental side trip to El Salvador based on a legendary airport mix-up). He also enjoyed visiting Walt Disney World.
The interests of his younger years continued throughout his life. Whether it was his affection for Calvin & Hobbes, his love of Absolut ads and the musical stylings of Weird Al Yankovic or his appreciation of a “truly tasteless” joke book, he was a dedicated fan.
But Matt’s true passion was for his teams. His commitment to the New York Yankees and the Indianapolis Colts was absolute. From his décor to his wardrobe, everyone knew that Matt rooted for the Yankees and the Colts. Their seasons were the highlights of his year and he followed all their players and stats, organizing his life around their games. Even in the years when they didn’t live up to their full potential, Matt always believed they would pull it off – if not this season, then next year.
Matt is survived by his parents, Gerald and Karen (Nee Williams) Fox, his sister Kathy Fox Franklin and her husband Nick, his niece Kelsey and his nephew Tate. He also leaves behind many cousins from his mother’s side, Williams family, who were an important source of support and affection throughout Matt’s life.
The funeral service and memorial will be private. In lieu of flowers please root enthusiastically for a team you love, even if their record is decidedly mixed.
