A McDermott man is dead after a crash involving a UTV on Tuesday evening. What should have been a fun ride on a spring evening turned to tragedy. The man driving the vehicle has been arrested for aggravated vehicular homicide.
Here’s what Scioto County Sheriff Marty V. Donini says happened: Deputies responded to a 9-1-1 call made from a Wrights Run residence just after 6:30 pm. The caller told the dispatcher that there had been a UTV accident and a man had been injured.
UTVs (Utility Task Vehicles) are similar to ATVs (All Terrain Vehicles) in that they are designed for off-roading. But UTVs are sturdier and allow for passengers to sit beside you. That’s why the vehicles are sometimes called side-by-sides
Deputies and Detectives from the Scioto County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene as did first responders from the Union Fire Department, Union 10, and Scioto 2 rescue squads.
First responders found the man pinned under the UTV. The victim has been identified as 63-year-old Donald E. Webb of McDermott.
According to Captain John W. Murphy of the Scioto County Sheriff’s Office, the investigation showed that Webb was a passenger in the UTV.
The driver, 50-year-old Mark A. Ferguson of Arlington, lost control of the UTV and it overturned. Webb was thrown from the vehicle and then pinned underneath it.
Captain Murphy said Mr. Webb’s body will be transported to the Montgomery County Coroner’s Office for an autopsy.
Mr. Ferguson was arrested and charged with aggravated vehicular homicide and OVI. He was taken to the Scioto County Jail. Bond was set at $20,000. He’s scheduled to appear in Portsmouth Municipal Court today. But so far, there’s no information on that hearing available.
