What started as a routine traffic stop turned into a marijuana seizure after a driver was pulled over in the 2500 block of Gallia Street just after 2 a.m.
Portsmouth police say the driver was behind the wheel with a suspended license. Officers issued a citation and called for the vehicle to be towed to the impound lot. But the real surprise came during the tow inspection — a large glass jar packed with marijuana was spotted on the floorboard between the driver’s seat and the front passenger seat.
The weed was confiscated and taken to the police station to be destroyed.
It’s worth noting: while recreational marijuana use is legal in Ohio under certain conditions, there are still important rules to follow. Cannabis must be properly stored and packaged — no open containers rolling around in your ride. And yes, you still need a valid driver’s license to operate a motor vehicle, no matter how chill you’re feeling.
If your license is suspended for something minor, there’s some good news. A new Ohio law that took effect on April 9, 2025, makes it easier to get your license back. The law gets rid of suspensions for unpaid court fines and other low-level offenses. It also loosens restrictions tied to drug offenses, missed child support payments, and driving without insurance. The changes streamline the process and remove roadblocks for people trying to get back on track — literally and legally.
If you’ve been putting off reinstating your license, now might be the perfect time to take care of it.
