A South Point woman is facing theft charges after Walmart loss prevention officers say she repeatedly failed to scan merchandise at self-checkout—and this time, the store decided enough was enough.
According to deputies, Walmart Asset Protection detained the woman after she exited the store with more than $210 worth of unpaid merchandise.
Loss prevention employees told deputies they had encountered the woman on multiple previous occasions after she failed to scan all of her items at self-checkout. During those earlier incidents, they allowed her to pay for the overlooked merchandise rather than pursue criminal charges.
Store officials said the same thing happened again during this visit.
Investigators say the woman intentionally failed to scan several items while checking out, paying for only part of the shopping cart before leaving the store. She was stopped after passing all points of sale. Walmart determined the value of the unpaid merchandise was $210.73.
Deputies arrested the woman on a theft charge. Walmart also issued her a criminal trespass warning, banning her from returning to the store.
Two young children were with the woman at the time of the alleged theft. Their father responded to Walmart and took custody of the children before deputies transported her to the Lawrence County Jail.
Self-Checkout Isn’t Anonymous
Retailers are increasingly using sophisticated camera systems, artificial intelligence, and transaction monitoring to detect self-checkout theft. Asset protection investigators can review video, compare scanned items to what was placed in shopping bags, and even identify patterns involving repeat visits.
What may seem like a skipped scan or barcode swap is often captured from multiple camera angles and tied directly to a customer’s transaction history.
Parents should also remember that children often witness these incidents. Experts say involving children in shoplifting—even if they are not participating—can normalize dishonest behavior and create unnecessary trauma when an arrest occurs.
If you accidentally fail to scan an item at self-checkout, notify an employee immediately before leaving the store. Correcting an honest mistake on the spot is far different than walking past the registers with unpaid merchandise.
