What began as a tragic call for a possible overdose death ended in a near-miracle thanks to Narcan.
At 2:40 p.m., police and EMS rushed to a home on Offnere Street after receiving a report of a deceased man. But by the time first responders arrived, the man was awake and alert — revived by a dose of Narcan administered by his mother.
The man refused further medical treatment, and his mother told officers she would monitor him at home.
Local authorities say this incident is another reminder of both the life-saving power of Narcan and the scale of the area’s drug crisis. Narcan — a fast-acting medication that reverses the effects of opioid overdoses — has been credited with saving countless lives in Scioto County. But police caution that while Narcan can pull someone back from the brink, it doesn’t address the underlying addiction.
Southern Ohio continues to be hit hard by the opioid epidemic, with overdose calls among the most frequent emergencies for police and EMS. Families often find themselves in the impossible position of reviving loved ones at home, sometimes more than once.
Officials encourage residents to keep Narcan on hand if someone in their household is struggling with substance use and to call 911 immediately in the event of an overdose.
