Navy Corpsman from Ohio dies in Afghanistan attack
The attack in Afghanistan that claimed the lives of 13 American service members also included Ohio Navy Corpsman Max Soviak.
During his service in the US Navy, Max served as a medic, and he was a native of Berlin Heights.
A US Navy spokesman confirmed Max was tragically killed at the Abbey Gate of Hamid Karzai International Airport in Kabul.
A total of 169 Afghans were killed in the suicide bombings that occurred at the airport at the center of the US evacuations. According to reports, the attacks were carried out by ISIS.
U.S. Senator Rob Portman said, “Jane and I are heartbroken by the death of Max Soviak, a Navy Fleet Marine Force Hospital Corpsman from Berlin Heights, who lost his life in the service of his country. He was a hero who died serving with his Marine brothers helping to save fellow countrymen and our Afghan allies. We mourn his loss and are praying for his family and friends.”
