Officers launched an investigation into an assault after an inmate was injured in a cell and required a trip to the hospital.
Around 3:30 in the morning, an inmate in the Lawrence County Jail reported he had fallen off his bed and hit his eye. While an officer prepared to transport him to the hospital, the injured inmate told corrections officers that another inmate had punched him in the face.
Deputies questioned other inmates who may have witnessed the incident and the accused assailant claimed the victim had been smarting off to other inmates all day. He said at one point the man got very upset over the rules of checkers.
When advised to chill out, he said, “Or what bitch?” He said the victim made a move toward him, so he smacked him. Other inmates then broke up the fight.
However, no other inmates would admit to seeing anything. Officers released the injured man on his own recognizance.
