A Portsmouth Police Officer was stuck by a needle while investigating a theft report at Big Lots just after 6:30 pm.
Witnesses said several people were loading backpacks into a vehicle. When officers arrived at the scene, they spotted John Jewett and a male passenger who fled the scene.
Police arrested Jewett on an open warrant. While officers searched the vehicle, one of them was stuck with a needle. The owner of the car came to pick it up.

Officers booked Jewett into jail on charges of escape and failure to appear.
The police report did not reflect any transport of the officer to SOMC or a call to EMS for a quick checkup at the scene.
