Ohioans can now place legal bets on the Olympics for the first time, marking a significant milestone since the state legalized sports betting. The change came into effect with House Bill 29, which passed in December 2021 and made sports betting legal from January 1, 2023.
Governor Mike DeWine was among those who supported the legislation, highlighting its potential to boost state revenue. However, the move has faced criticism from those concerned about the potential for increased gambling addiction.
To place bets, Ohioans can use online platforms, visit casinos, racetracks, or use kiosks at bars and restaurants. Online platforms require account creation and age verification, while physical locations provide immediate assistance for betting. This landmark event coincides with the Summer Olympics in Paris, providing an exciting opportunity for sports enthusiasts across the state.
