Officers dealt with multiple reports of online scammers, including one targeting a nursing home resident.
A local man learned the hard way that you can’t believe everything someone tells you online.
He told officers he’d give $3,000 in total to a woman he met online after she made promises to come live with him. However, he later learned that she was not who he believed her to be. He’d never met the woman and couldn’t verify her identity.
He attempted to report the money as stolen, but police said that would be difficult without more information.
An employee of a local nursing home contacted the Scioto County Sheriff’s Office to say they believed a resident was being catfished by a scammer and sending the person money.
However, officers said there was nothing they could do to help as the woman was sending the man money of her own free will. They suggested that perhaps a relative could seek a power of attorney to control the woman’s finances.
