Portsmouth Police responded to an overdose at the Post Office and a woman was discovered dead on Bloom Street. We break down the Portsmouth Police Chief’s Daily Briefing.
Truck Crashes Into Pole
A truck crashed into a pole on Harding Avenue just before 8 pm and then fled the scene. A caller was concerned the pole might fall over.
City Services advised it is an old traffic pole and no longer in service. They said they would dispatch someone to remove the pole in the morning.
Hey, That’s My Stuff!
An 11th Street caller reported someone broke into their apartment and stole several items just after 10 pm. Police took information for a report.
Drunk Man Drives Off Overpass, Takes Out Hydrant
Just before 11 pm, a car went off the overpass in the 5800 block of US 52, took out a hydrant, and landed on the railroad tracks.
Police took a man into custody and went to the Ohio State Patrol Post for a sobriety test. He refused the test and officers arrested him for OVI and transported him to the Scioto County Jail.
Police arranged for the vehicle to be towed and after-hours Waterworks personnel fixed the hydrant.
Man Arrested For Busting Ex-Girlfriend’s Window
A 7th Street woman contacted police just after midnight to report her ex-boyfriend broke out her bedroom window.
Police took a man into custody.
Racially Motivated Bar Fight
A caller contacted police at 12:49 am to report a big racial fight in front of JJ’s Shenanigans. The caller said there was a knife involved.
Five units responded to the scene. The women involved did not want medical assistance nor did they want to press charges. The bar requested that the women leave.
They left on foot to head to their high Street Home.
Overdose at the Post Office
A troubled man, with whom police have daily contact overdosed at the Portsmouth Post Office at 4:43 am.
Earlier in the day, officers found him half-naked yelling in the street and bleeding from an old injury. At that time he was transported to SOMC, which apparently released him back onto the street.
First responders transported him to the hospital for the second time in 12 hours.

The last step is accepting help. No matter how well we may provide inpatient mental health treatment and clinical drug treatment, it ultimately boils down to what the individual decides to do.
Woman Found Dead on Bloom Street
At 7:04 am, a man called police after he discovered his mother unresponsive on the floor of her Bloom Street home.
Medics declared her dead at the scene and police contacted the coroner. She had a black eye, but the son said she’d tripped and hit her head on a gate a few nights earlier.
There were no other suspicious injuries on the body. Coroner transport picked up the deceased.
