Portsmouth first responders were called to multiple overdoses in a single day, highlighting the ongoing opioid crisis in the area.
Two Overdose Calls in 16 Hours
🔹 1:00 AM – Valley Street
A caller frantically reported that a man had overdosed and wasn’t breathing. But when EMS and police arrived, the man had already left the scene, leaving responders without a patient to help.
🔹 5:00 PM – Summit Street
A second call came in reporting an unresponsive woman suffering from a suspected overdose. This time, EMS and police found her alive, but she refused medical attention and declined to speak with the drug crisis response team.
What to Do If You Suspect an Overdose
If you see someone overdosing, acting fast can save their life:
✔ Call 911 Immediately – Give the exact location and describe the person’s condition.
✔ Check for Signs of Overdose – Look for:
- Slow or no breathing
- Blue lips or fingertips
- Gurgling or snoring sounds
- Unresponsiveness
✔ Administer Narcan (Naloxone) – This lifesaving medication can reverse an opioid overdose. If you have it:
- Spray one dose in the person’s nose
- Perform rescue breathing if necessary
- Stay with them until help arrives
Why Having Narcan is a Game-Changer
Narcan is legal and easy to use. You don’t have to be a doctor to administer it.
You can get it free or at low cost from local health departments, pharmacies, and harm reduction programs.
Even if the person is unconscious, Narcan won’t harm them—but it might save their life.
Why EMS Can’t Force Treatment
Many people wonder why first responders can’t make overdose victims go to the hospital. The reason? Adults have the right to refuse medical care, unless they are:
Unconscious and unable to decide for themselves
A danger to themselves or others (e.g., suicidal)
Under certain court orders
While it’s heartbreaking to see someone refuse help, the best thing you can do is offer support and keep the door open for when they are ready to accept assistance.
Portsmouth continues to battle the overdose crisis, and the need for community awareness, Narcan availability, and treatment options has never been greater. If you or someone you love is struggling, help is available.
