Paul Askew, 84 of Portsmouth, died Friday, February 9, 2024, at his home. He was born June 16, 1939, in Portsmouth to the late Ray and Marie Heath Askew. Along with his parents, he is preceded in death by 2 brothers, John Russell Askew and Donald James Askew, and a sister Wanda Askew.
Paul was an army veteran, a barber, but you may have known his voice from his Sunday morning show on WIOI 1010AM and 106.7FM or from his band where he was the lead singer of Cabin Bluegrass Boys. He was an avid Cincinnati Reds fan and was a fighter till the very end. He wanted to live to 100 years old and even though he didn’t make it, he always said he would die trying. He loved to play the guitar, mandolin, banjo, bass, and joke around and make people laugh and loved God, his family, and bluegrass music.
Paul is survived by his daughter Katherin Gillispie (Michael Paul), 2 grandchildren, Bailee and Ellison Gillispie, a sister Ruth Jean Mullins, and several nieces and nephews whom he loved very much.
Funeral services will be at 1:00 PM Tuesday, February 13, 2024, at Roger W Davis Funeral Home in West Portsmouth with Reverend Danny Rowe officiating and interment in Black Oak Cemetery in Vanceburg. Friends may call the funeral home on Tuesday starting at 11 AM. Condolences may be sent to www.rogerwdavisfuneralhome.com
