As preparations are made to return to school, some disturbing news was made at the latest Portsmouth City School Board meeting. According to the interim Treasurer, who is filling in while the current treasurer is on leave, dozens of accounts are negative, preventing the interim Treasurer from closing the books.
According to his statements to the board and meeting attendees, they are missing $6.279 million. When the figure was announced, you could hear an audible groan throughout the meeting room.
This news comes after a shakeup on the board, including the replacement of the Superintendent and the resignation of the former board president. That was followed by reports of state officials serving a search warrant on the district offices. This new announcement of missing millions only further embattles the board.
According to our sources within the district, employee payroll has not been affected, except for one “glitch” that delayed payments for some employees at the beginning of summer break.
SCDN will continue to follow up on the progress of the search for the missing millions and update you when we have more.
