PPD – Missing Ohio Man Finds Himself

A missing man who found himself, a drug and gun bust and multiple people with mental health issues kept Portsmouth Police busy on Wednesday.  We break down the highlights of their calls in these next 18 slides. Shots Fired?

Firecrackers prompted reports of gunshots around 1 am. Someone flagged down a patrol car at 7th and Brown Street. When officers investigated, they discovered that the noise was loud firecrackers.

Help wanted… with something

Someone flagged down a security officer and told him he wanted to see a police officer on Dorman Drive. When officers went to check, they couldn’t quite figure out what was up. It was something to do with a vehicle but the vehicle wasn’t stolen. The woman wanted to confirm that her vehicle had not been stolen. Police couldn’t even confirm she owned the vehicle in question.

Suspicious Individuals

  • A Coles Blvd. man reported that someone opened his back door just after 2 am. He observed three people walking towards the hospital. Officers checked Coles, Sheridan, 28th, and all side streets. They did not see anything suspicious.
  • A Kentland Avenue woman came home just before 8 pm to find her back door open. An officer checked the house and found it clear.

Cry For Help

Police responded to a report of a man having a nervous breakdown at 3:17 am. The guy refused to go to the hospital. He also refused all other options suggested by officers.

Police were back at that address an hour later. The man refused transport by the fire department but allowed an officer to take him to SOMC. The fire department followed just in case they were needed.

Hey, That’s My Stuff

  • An 11th street caller reported a tire stolen just before 3:30 am. Police took a report.
  • Police answered a call about a stolen weed eater and leaf blower missing from a Timmonds Avenue garage just after 11:30 am. They took a report.
  • A man called police at 5:50 pm to report a gun missing from his trunk. He claimed his girlfriend took the weapon. Police took a report.
  • A woman called police from Gallia Street just after 7 pm and reported her boyfriend took her keys and her phone, then ran off.  He later returned the phone. Police explained how to get a protection order.

False Alarms

  • At 3:23 am, officers responded to a motion and fire alarm at the Bridge Carryout. The premises appeared secure and nothing was wrong inside.
  • Just before 6 am, an alarm sounded at the Dialysis Center on 17th Street. Again, everything looked fine.
  • Officers responded to a Fire Alarm at the Shawnee Apartment at 7:42 am. It turned out to just be burnt food.
  • A commercial alarm went off at 9:30 am at the old Blevins Garage building. Turned out to just be an employee.
  • Dust apparently set off a fire alarm at the Hudson House at 1:13 pm.  PMHA called to cancel.
  • Another false alarm at 1:36 pm at the SOMC East Campus. The alarm company called to cancel
  • There was a false alarm at the McCormick building just after 8 pm. Someone with security told police they were having issues with the alarm and working to reset it.

Drugs and Guns

A report of a drug deal brought officers to the Oasis Convenient Mart at 11 am. A caller reported a man dealing drugs in the parking lot with a gun shoved in his waistband.

Officers discovered several weapons, at least one of them stolen and made at least one address.

Wheels Off

Officers received a report of a disabled vehicle at the Young Street Overpass. The car’s wheel fell off. An officer put the wheel back on the car and helped move it out of traffic.

Tires Thrown at Kids

Officers answered an unusual domestic all just before 1 pm. A caller reported a man in a garage throwing tires at a little boy and girl. A neighbor claimed the child advised the man the oven was on fire and the man then threw a drill bit at the boy.  Additionally, the neighbor said the man cussed out the children.

The fire department found no sign of a fire but police did notify Children Services.

Boat On A Tree

A fisherman notified police about a boat sitting on a tree near the Little Scioto River Bridge at 1:39 pm. He worried it might be stolen.

Neighbors told officers the boat belongs to a man who parks it behind his home on the Little Scioto. He wasn’t home, so the police couldn’t check.

Strange Package

A Kentland Avenue caller reported a strange package. The caller hadn’t ordered anything. An officer discovered a mask sent by CIGNA inside and threw it in the trash.

Bank Beef

A woman called multiple times just after 2 pm to say she needed police because she was accused of stealing someone’s money.

Officers responded to the Drive-Thru at US Bank on Gay. An employee observed two women arguing as they went through the drive-thru. Police couldn’t’ find the parties.

Can’t We All Just Get Along?

  • Officers responded to a report of two women arguing on Gay Street just after 2:30 pm. Officers took one of the women in regards to a warrant. She signed the bond form and police dropped her off at her car.
  • A woman called police at 4 pm to report threats were made to her over a phone dispute. She called back again at 6 pm to report more threats. Officers tracked down the woman who made the threats. Both parties were cautioned and advised it was a civil matter.
  • Police were called to Thomas Avenue at 8:30 pm for a report of kids and adults fighting. Police said the disagreement was verbal and advised everyone to pipe down.

Help Wanted

The owner of an 11th Street strip mall called in just before 3 pm and asked about extra patrols. Vagrants are causing a problem in the area.  He was told to call the Captain’s office to set up an off-duty detail.

Three hours later, police stopped a man digging through a dumpster on 11th Street and advised him to leave.

Under The Influence

  • Police answered a call of an overdose on 6th Street at 4 pm. The man was alert when they found him in an alley across from the old Wilson School.  He agreed to hospital transport.
  • An overdose allegedly led to a fight on Harding Avenue at 9:30 pm. A man came home and found his wife OD’d on the floor. He administered Narcan. Then they began to argue over it. Police said everyone seemed fine when they got there.

Go Straight Back To Kentucky

An odd incident just before 9 pm at Kroger. A man hanging around the side of the building told a customer, “he needs to get his woman straight.” He also asked the customers to “meet him in the street.”

When police arrived, he was advised to head back to Kentucky. He agreed. Kroger no longer wants him on the property.

Feeling Afraid

A frightened man with mental health issues called PPD for help just after 10 pm. He asked an officer to stand by while he got into his vehicle to leave. He said he felt people might be outside his house. Further, he thought six to eight people were trying to stop him and his life was in danger.

Someone he knew took him somewhere for the evening to keep an eye out.

I’m Not Missing

A man called officers to report that he was not missing. He said his wife had posted all over Facebook that he was missing. She also posted she planned to file a missing person’s report.

He asked police to let her know he was in a detox facility in Franklin Furnace. Police delivered the message.
