Helping Hands Are There—But Only If You Reach for Them
The Portsmouth Police Department once again proved their commitment to helping those in crisis, responding to a late-night call at the Gallia Street Marathon about a woman in distress.
A Call for Help
Just after 10 p.m., concerned witnesses dialed 911, reporting a woman sitting inside the store and rambling. Officers arrived on the scene and quickly assessed the situation. Recognizing a possible mental health crisis, they immediately called in local crisis counselors to offer assistance.
The Limits of Help
Police determined the woman was aware of her surroundings—she knew the day, date, and city she was in. Crisis counselors from a local mental health facility offered her a path to care, explaining that she would need to be evaluated at Southern Ohio Medical Center before she could be admitted to the crisis center.
She refused to go to the hospital. Since she was not a danger to herself or others, police and counselors were unable to force her to accept help.
How Police and Crisis Teams Work Together
The Portsmouth Police Department works closely with mental health professionals to assist individuals struggling with crisis situations. However, help is only effective when someone is willing to accept it.
Did You Know? In Ohio, mental health treatment cannot be forced unless a person is deemed a threat to themselves or others. That means many struggling individuals fall through the cracks simply because they refuse care.
