Ohio has some new laws on the books that have generated a lot of fuss. But what do they actually mean for your life? Let’s check it out.
Legal Pot – Ohioans over 21 can have up to 2.5 ounces of cannabis or ½ an ounce (15 grams) of cannabis extract in their possession. Each adult can also grow six plants – but no more than 12 plants per household.
This doesn’t mean that you can drive high or be stoned in public. OVI and public intoxication are still illegal.
Abortion laws – the abortion protections Ohioans voted into law reaffirm what they call “an individual’s right to make reproductive decisions. However, they didn’t repeal any existing laws and reaffirmed that the state could ban abortions once a fetus is viable. The word viable is often open to debate, so there likely will be challenges ahead.
Minimum Wage – By order of the Ohio Constitution, the state’s minimum wage goes up at the rate of inflation every January 1. This year it goes from $10.10 to $10.45 an hour. Interestingly, according to Zip Recruiter, the average hourly pay for advertised positions in the state is $18.36 per hour.
