PPD Has Busy Weekend

PPD had a busy weekend. Portsmouth officers responded to 225 calls between Thursday and early Monday morning. Six of those calls were for the same guy who absolutely refuses to stay away from the Speedway on Gallia. We’ve also got a retirement home resident reporting her neighbor for having company and a married couple who decided that throwing bricks at each other’s cars was the right way to spend Easter.

We break down the calls in 15 slides:

1

OD & Drug-Related

  • Just after midnight on Thursday, officers responded to the Four Keys Inn on the Scioto Trail for a report of a woman not breathing in a bathtub.  By the time police arrived, she was alert enough to refuse treatment.
  • Just after 10 am, officers were summoned to a High Street home by a man who said his wife was “acting out of her mind.” He told police she was running into things and tearing up the house.  He also claimed his wife was high on meth and had counterfeit money.  Officers advised the people involved to stay away from each other.
  • Officers answered an overdose call just before noon on Thursday. When they arrived the woman was alert and awake. She said she was just sleeping.
  • There was another overdose call on 11th street at 1:30 pm.
  • There was yet another report of an OD just after 3:30 pm on Thursday. This time on Offnere Street. The man refused further treatment.
  • Police responded to a possible OD on Daniels Drive just before 9 pm on Friday. Medics helped the person out at the scene.

DOA

  • Just before 2 pm on Thursday, officers found a body cold to the touch at a Grant Street apartment. The called the coroner for transport.
  • At 9:30 am on Friday officers answered another call for a deceased person on Summit Street. The body was released to a funeral home.

3

Stormy Weather

  • Thanks to strong winds early Thursday morning, officers responded to reports of trees in the road on Robinson Avenue, Shawnee Road, Campbell Avenue, and Dorman Drive. As well as Debris in the roadway on Pleasant Avenue.
  • The wind also led to someone on 28th Street calling police to complain about their neighbor’s wind chimes. Officers advised that wind chimes are not a police matter.
  • A Wilson Street neighbor called police around 5:30 pm to report that a neighbor’s tree fell on her house. Officers advised that it was a civil matter.

4

Suspicious Persons

  • Just before 4 am, police answered a call on Grant street regarding multiple people with bats outside a residence. There was no one there when officers arrived.
  • Just before noon, police responded of a report of a man going into a hole in the wall on Lawson Street. The subject was wearing a gray hoodie, ragged jeans, and carrying two backpacks. Police found he’d slipped into a small opening between buildings. He was homeless and had no place to go.

5

Risky Business

  • The owner of the Dari Crème on 2nd Street called police on Thursday morning to report a man was living in a camper on the property. PPD advised the camper to move on.
  • The folks at Home City Ice found items behind the building they thought might be connected to a meth lab. An expert checked it out and said that it did not appear to be drug-related.
  • Polices were summoned to the Taco Bell at 3:50 pm for a report of women throwing eggs at the building. Police advised the restaurant to call back if there was damage to the property.
  • An intoxicated man bothered customers at both the Aldi and Speedway on Gallia street around 7 pm on Thursdays. Police twice advised the man to stay away from the business.
  • Just up the hill at the Oasis Convenient Mart around 8 am, a man with no shoes was pounding on doors and windows. Police said he appeared to be high. They took him to his mother’s house to get some shoes.
  • It looks as if someone wanted to get cleaned up for the holiday. Just after noon on Sunday, officers were called to the Wendy’s on Gallia for a report of a man trying to take a shower with their hose. He was gone before police arrived.

6

Return Customer

  • Early Friday morning, a man who’d been barred from the Speedway kept trying to get back in.
  • Not sure if it’s related, but a few minutes later a man was also hanging around the Royal Inn on Kendall. He was also advised to leave.
  • About an hour after that, someone was once again back on the scene at Speedway.
  • Thirty minutes later, another call about someone who won’t leave the property.
  • At 10:30 pm on Friday, the same guy was back at the Speedway on Gallia. This time he was refusing to leave the bathroom.  He was gone when police arrived.
  • Just after midnight, the same guy returned to the Speedway. He was once again advised to stay away.
  • He was back bright and early Easter morning at 7:30 am. PPD officers escorted him off the property.

7

Invisible Assailants

  • Officers were called to a 5th Street home around 2:30 pm on Thursday. A man claimed someone had hit him in the head with a baseball bat.  Police say the man had no injuries and there was not bat at the scene.  He claimed his assailant was in the kitchen. However, he was the only person in the house. He told officers he would handle the problem himself.
  • At 11:45 pm on Thursday, police responded to Harding Avenue where a man said subjects were coming to beat him up. Police said he wasn’t making a lot of sense and appeared to have mental health issues.  He asked if they could get his girlfriend to come back home.  When PPD contacted her, she told them they’ve been broken up for some time and that he has a drug problem.  Officers believing he might have been using the police just to get in contact with her.

8

Go Directly To Jail

It’s not easy to actually get taken to jail these days. But attempting to stab someone will get you a ride in the back of a patrol car. Around 5:15 pm on Thursday, officers responded to the Dollar General Store on Gallia for a report of a man with a knife who attempted to stab someone.  PPD arrested him and took him to the Scioto County Jail.

9

In The Drink

Just after 8:30 on Friday, a man reported that his truck rolled into the river. He’d parked near the Court Street landing to walk his dog. The truck rolled down the embankment.

10

Retaliation

A scary situation for a corrections officer on Friday. He reported that an ex-inmate has been making threats to him and his wife. PPD took a report.

11

State Lines

PPD responded to a report of a vehicle on the Grant Bridge. The flashers were on but no one was around. Turns out the driver was trying to get someone to help him pull the vehicle into Kentucky where his tow truck was waiting. It seems the tow driver charged extra to come across the state line.

12

Unhappy Neighbor

A resident of the Riverview Retirement Center called officers around 8:30 on Friday to report that one of her neighbors was having family over despite the Coronavirus quarantine. She also said that the neighbor’s family was rude. Officers advised her to notify building management.

13

A Brick For a Brick

An 11th Street couple celebrated Easter by damaging each other’s cars with bricks and boards. Police advised them that since they are married, the vehicles are community property. The man left. Officers told the woman to stay inside.

14

Facebook Crime

A 7th street woman called officers around 7:30 pm on Easter to report that her daughter’s Facebook was hacked and her personal information stolen. It happened why she was responding to a job application. She gave a man her DOB, email, and Facebook account information. He stole her account. Officers advised contacting Facebook.

15

Near Miss

A man driving a white Chevy Truck nearly hit a County Squad on Coles Blvd at 1 am on Monday. The crew followed the man and officers took him into custody.
