Every day, Scioto County first responders answer multiple calls concerning fears someone is considering suicide. Fortunately, in most cases, they are able to intervene and steer individuals in the direction of agencies that can help them. Sadly, it was too late for a Portsmouth woman.
Just before 5 p.m., a frantic neighbor contacted 9-1-1 to say her neighbor had just shot herself in the chest. Two minutes later another call came in about the same incident.
Three medical units and three squad cars responded to the home. The victim was pronounced dead around 6:30 pm and the case was referred to the coroner’s office. That agency made arrangements to transport the victim. Officers impounded multiple items at the scene and took information for a report.
Earlier in the day, Scioto County Sheriff’s Deputies received a call from a man who said his girlfriend threatened to kill herself. Officers initially had difficulty contacting the people involved, as they’d left where the man originally called from.
The man called back and told deputies she was calling him as she drove around. Police finally caught up with the woman, who said she had no plans to harm herself and did not want to go to the hospital.
If you or someone you know is considering suicide, there is help out there. Scioto County residents call 740-354-1010 at any time or call 9-1-1 for assistance.
