Restaurant Employee Caught on Camera Swiping Deposit

Restaurant security cameras captured an employee swiping a deposit and a troubled man takes off his pants and lies down on Gay Street. We hit the highlights of the Portsmouth Police Chief’s Daily Briefing.

Traffic Stop Leads to Parolee’s Arrest

Just after noon, a traffic stop on 5th Street led to the arrest of a Kentucky parolee. Officers detained the male driver and issued a citation.

Kentucky Parole confirmed an open warrant on the woman. Police took her into custody.

Teens Reported Missing Twice in One Morning

Stripping Down on Gay Street

Police responded to a report of a man with no shirt yelling at 7th and Gay Streets. A minute later, a witness reported the man took off his pants and lay down in the street.

When police responded to the scene, they discovered a deeply troubled man with whom they have daily contact. In the past week, the man has been taken into custody multiple times for erratic behavior and transported to the hospital after overdosing at the hospital.

However, due to state laws and the lack of a psychiatric hospital in Portsmouth, the man was released back onto the streets each time.

This time PMC probation agreed to put a probation detainer on the man. Officers sent for an ambulance to check him out. They ended up issuing a citation.

Publisher’s Note: When patients are under the influence of alcohol or drugs, mental health facilities usually won’t take them. At the moment, there aren’t enough facilities to accommodate those in need of emergency mental health treatment. Any assistance our citizens can provide in contacting their representatives is greatly appreciated by law enforcement officials.

Before drafting legislation, our state and federal representatives need to do their research on the issue and talk to those who have knowledge on the subject. Otherwise, you will get what Scioto County has with its numerous non-clinical sober living houses.

The last step is accepting help. No matter how well we may provide inpatient mental health treatment and clinical drug treatment, it ultimately boils down to what the individual decides to do.

Meanwhile on Mabert Road

At 4:28 pm, a Mabert Road resident reported tags stolen from their vehicle.

The caller said the tags were taken sometime between Christmas and 2/10/22. Police took information for a report.

Employee Caught Swiping Deposit

Officers were called to Penn Station on Chillicothe after a $750 deposit went missing.

When police viewed the store’s security video they observed an employee sneaking around with the money near the save.

Police watched him keep an eye on other employees and then stuff the envelope with the money behind some objects in the store.

Officers recovered the money and returned it to the manager. The manager said the employee would be fired and chose not to file a report.

Drunk Driver Busted on 8th Street

Officers pulled over a vehicle at 8th and Broadway at 11:22 pm. They took the driver to the Ohio State Patrol Post for a sobriety test.

Police impounded the vehicle and arranged for it to be towed. The driver was arrested for OVI and taken to the Scioto County Jail.

Suspicious Activity

  • Just after midnight, a Charles Street caller reported a suspicious vehicle on Charles Street. Police discovered a woman with open warrants and took her into custody. Her male companion said he would find a driver with a valid license to move the vehicle.

A 5th Street caller reported a suspicious man checking vehicles at 1 am. Officers spoke with the man, who was carrying a flashlight. They said he is mentally ill and not breaking any laws. They advised him to move along.
