It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Richard Powell Sr., beloved husband, father, and community leader, who left this world on December 23, 2024, at the age of 81. Born on June 10, 1943, in Minford, Ohio, Richard’s life was marked by dedicated service to both his family and the community he cherished.
Richard was a distinguished banker, serving the local community as the President and CEO of Desco Federal Credit Union from 1974 until his retirement in 2004. His unwavering commitment to helping others fostered financial well-being across Scioto County and the surrounding areas. Beyond his professional achievements, Richard served on the Minford Telephone Board for an impressive 39 years, devoting his time and expertise to enhance local services.
A proud veteran of the United States Army, Richard enlisted on February 6, 1967, and served until his honorable discharge on October 15, 1969. His service to his country was a testament to his character and dedication, qualities that he continued to exemplify throughout his life. As a member of the American Legion James Dickey Post #23, Richard actively engaged with fellow veterans, valuing the friendships formed during his time in service.
He will be remembered not only for his professional contributions but for the warmth he brought to every relationship. For 57 wonderful years, Richard shared a loving partnership with his wife, Anne (nee Sylvia) Powell of Wheelersburg. Together, they built a life filled with laughter, love, and a shared commitment to their family-sons Richard “Lee” (Christy) Powell Jr. and Brooks Powell both of Minford, two grandchildren, Alex and Jenna Powell both of Columbus, who will carry forward his legacy with pride. He also leaves behind a nephew, Duane (Theresa) Powell of West Jeffeson, a brother in law Bane (Bonnie) Sylvia of Wheelersburg, and two sister in laws, Ellen (Ed) Miller of Hilliard and Janet (Ron) Ashley of Wheelersburg.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents, Ray and Thelma (Nee Shaffer) Powell, one brother, Raymond Powell and one sister Mylia Jean Powell.
Richard’s passion for building community bonds manifested through countless friendships. He treasured the moments spent with friends, forging connections that enriched his life and the lives of those around him. His spirit of generosity and kindness touched many, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of all who knew him.
A private interment service with Military Honors from the American Legion James Dickey Post #23 will be held at Mt. Carmel Cemetery, Minford, Ohio. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to SOMC Hospice House, 2201 25th Street, Portsmouth, OH 45662, in memory of Richard.
