Rick Ferrell Has Surprise Planned for Concert
Hit-making singer/songwriter Rick Ferrell has a special surprise in store for his hometown crowd when he performs with rising country star Chris Turner at the Vern Riffe Center for the Arts on April 15.
Ferrell, who wrote the most-played song of the 2000s, Tim McGraw’s ‘Something Like That,’ was born in Portsmouth and grew up on the West Side.
The Portsmouth West graduate says there were too many good times back in the day for him to pick his favorite memory of growing up in the area, “All of my best memories growing up was with my family and close friends that are still to this day like family to me.”
When I asked Ferrell to name some of his favorite places, he hesitated for a minute. “Hmmm! Well, without giving away my secret spots and because of my passion for musky fishing since I was a teenager being near the two rivers with all their tributaries is amazing!”
While ‘Something Like That’ may be his biggest hit, he has a special place in his heart for a song with a local connection. “One of my lesser-known songs that I’m most proud of is called “I Ain’t Crazy” recorded by Earl Thomas Conley and was released to radio back in the 90’s. Earl was a close friend and a big influence on my music when I first moved to Nashville.”
Rick Ferrell says it’s always special to come back home to perform and see his family, friends, and best fans. “My hometown and the surrounding area has been a huge inspiration on my musical journey and a very deep well for me to draw from as a songwriter.”
And he says those fans are in for a treat with the upcoming “All in the Same Boat” concert on Saturday, April 15. Fans can expect lots of energy and to hear the stories that inspired his songs and something special, “A surprise song I just wrote for the West Girls 2023 basketball team- the winningest team in school history!”
