Rose Ann Joyce, 96, of McDermott, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 22, 2025. Born on February 5, 1929, to the late William Matthew Joyce and Nelle Francis Walsh Joyce, Rose Ann spent her entire life living on the family farm where she was born. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, William and Bernard Joyce, and her nephew, Mark Cistone.
She is survived by her beloved sister, Mary Ellen Cistone; her nieces and nephews, Leonard (Marijo) Cistone, Clare (Christopher) Gale, Matthew Cistone, William (Rochelle) Cistone, Timothy (Tamara) Cistone, Martin (Elaine) Joyce, Daniel (Leah Ann) Joyce, Brian (Cecilia) Joyce, and Mary Ann (Bill) Reinhart; as well as numerous great-nieces, great-nephews, and dear friends.
A 1947 graduate of Otway High School, Rose Ann went on to earn her degree from The College of Mount St. Joseph in Cincinnati, a city that always remained close to her heart. She later completed her master’s degree at Marshall University in Huntington, West Virginia. Following her education, Rose Ann returned home to teach at McDermott High School, later continuing her career at Northwest High School, where she served from 1958 until her retirement in 1982. Upon retiring, she devoted herself to caring for the family farm, a commitment she upheld throughout the rest of her life.
Those fortunate enough to know Rose Ann understood her to be truly one of a kind. Brilliant and endlessly wise, she freely shared her knowledge and mentored countless individuals over the years, so many that she was often recognized by former students wherever she went. She was known for her generosity, supporting numerous charitable causes, and also known for her wit with a sharp sense of humor that was without comparison.
Rose Ann’s beloved German Shepherds and her deep love for all animals were a true light in her life. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Sierra’s Haven for New and Used Pets to honor her compassion for animals. Donations can be made at www.sierrashaven.org.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, May 6, 2025, at Holy Trinity Church on Pond Creek, with Father Fulton officiating. A private burial will follow.
