Two people have been charged in connection with the death of a puppy that died after being thrown out a window in Ross County.
According to the Ross County Humane Society, they were notified along with the Ross County Dog Warden, of a case of suspected animal abuse on Wednesday, January 15 by the Town and Country Animal Clinic in Chillicothe. A male puppy was suffering from severe trauma and appeared to have been the victim of abuse. The Humane Society assumed custody of the puppy and transported it to Northfork Animal Clinic. The puppy required advanced treatment and was taken to MedVet Hospital in Worthington.
The puppy, who was suffering from a traumatic brain injury later died of its injuries.
According to police, Joshua Keets, of Chillicothe, threw the puppy out of the window of his home for barking and then slammed the puppy to the ground. He put the puppy in a crate and then threw the crate against a fence. He was charged with animal cruelty. Also charged was Belinda Hufferd who lived with Keets. Huffered’s charges were the result of failure to seek treatment for the animal.
There were other puppies at the residence that were seized by Deputy Pam Longlott of the Ross County Dog Warden.
Jenn Thomas, Executive Director of the Humane Society said, “I would like to thank Town and Country Animal Clinic, the Chillicothe Police Department, the Ross County Dog Warden office, Northfork Animal Clinic, and MedVet for their efforts and attempts to save this puppy and for working together to file charges as necessary. We hope justice will be served in due course.”
The Humane Society said additional charges may be filed later and they will update the public if that happens.
