Samuel Anthony Venturino, a beloved brother, father, and cherished friend, passed away unexpectedly on February 20, 2025, at the age of 75. Born on September 10, 1949, in Portsmouth, Ohio, to Anthony and Carol Imogene (Nee Cozzens) Venturino. Sammy lived a life filled with passion, dedication, and joy that left an indelible mark on all who knew him.

A proud graduate of Portsmouth High School in 1967, Sammy was a vibrant spirit with a zest for life. In his youth, he showcased his talent as the lead singer of a rock and roll band, winning the hearts of many in the Portsmouth area when they triumphed in the battle of the bands. His athletic prowess was evident, as he played baseball and football throughout school, even earning a draft from the Pittsburgh Pirates-a dream opportunity that was sadly deferred when he was drafted into the United States Army. Sam served his country honorably from May 21, 1969, until May 20, 1975.

After his service, Sammy dedicated himself to his career as a postal carrier and handler at the U.S. Post Office, proudly serving his community with the same commitment he had shown in the military. He was a familiar face and a warm presence in the lives of his neighbors.

Sammy’s love for sports remained steadfast throughout his life. He enjoyed bowling, golfing, and playing both baseball and softball, showcasing his skills as an excellent shortstop. A highlight of his athletic achievements came in 1993 when he represented the Michael Bolton Celebrity team at the renowned Comiskey Park in Chicago, where they triumphed over the Michael Jordan Celebrity team in an exciting game that ended in a 7-1 victory.

As a longtime member of the Moose, Eagles, and the American Legion James Dickey Post #23 in Portsmouth, Sammy forged lasting friendships within these communities. An avid supporter of Ohio State University, the Cincinnati Reds, and the Cleveland Browns, Sammy’s enthusiasm for his teams was infectious, bringing joy to many of his fellow fans.

Sammy is survived by his beloved son, Scott (Alicia Carver) Venturino of Portsmouth, who carries forward his father’s legacy of kindness, generosity, and love; two loving sisters: Tonette Howbert of Tipp City, and Deanie (Robert) Merrifield of Portsmouth; grandchildren: Gabriel Anthony and Emma Nathelie Venturino, Casen Isaac Carver and Italy Cook, all of Portsmouth, as well as his longtime friends Doug (Debbie) Whitman of Portsmouth and Leroy “Buck” Glenn of Columbus. He leaves behind a myriad of memories that will be cherished by family and friends alike. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Anthony and Carol Imogene (Nee Cozzens) Venturino and his brother Harry Venturino and infant sister Carol Jeanine Venturino.
