The Ohio State Highway Patrol reported today that Scioto County had the highest number of fatalities over the 2024 Memorial Day weekend. The county experienced a particularly deadly wreck on State Route 104, claiming four lives. In total, there were 14 crashes resulting in 17 deaths statewide, a decrease from last year’s 26 fatalities. The four-day reporting period began on Friday, May 24, and concluded on Monday, May 27.
During this period, state troopers made 19,104 traffic enforcement contacts across Ohio. These included 361 impaired driving arrests, 61 drug arrests, 2,662 safety belt citations, and 1,090 distracted driving citations. In addition, the Patrol provided 9,779 non-enforcement contacts, including 1,950 motorist assists.
Scioto County also saw a high number of traffic incidents, with 345 cases ranging from OVI, drug-related incidents, and distracted driving.
Adams County had 166 incidents, Pike County saw 168 incidents, Jackson County had 326 cases, and Lawrence County topped our coverage area with 414 traffic-related incidents.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol reminded motorists that roadway safety is a shared responsibility. Drivers are encouraged to call #677 to report drug activity and dangerous or impaired driving.
