Sex Offender Refuses To Leave Homeless Shelter

A sex offender put up a fight when asked to leave a homeless shelter and a man was busted for urinating on the war memorial in Tracy Park.  We break down the highlights from the Portsmouth Police Chief’s Daily Briefing.

Domestic Disturbances

  • At 12:20 am, officers responded to a domestic disturbance between a man and a woman at the Royal Inn. Adams County had a warrant out for the male half of the couple.
  • About 30 minutes later, police responded to High Street A woman said her husband would not allow her to leave the house. Police said both parties were drinking. The husband said he was concerned the wife might harm herself. An officer dropped the woman off in New Boston.
  • Just after 1:30 am, police responded to a report of two women arguing near Portsmouth Ambulance on Gallia. When officers arrived on the scene and spoke to one of the women, she claimed her ‘ex old lady’ was causing her problems. Police worried the woman might have mental health issues but she refused medical attention.
  • Police responded to 7th Street at 3:10 am for a report of a man and woman fighting. The resident of the home told police she was very sick and that her son and daughter wouldn’t stop arguing. She wanted them to leave the residence. Both siblings agreed to leave.
  • At 12:58 pm, a 16th Street woman told police her nephew hit her in the face and then left for Florida. Officers told her to call them if he returns.
  • Just after 8 pm, a woman told police a man was attempting to break into her 16th Street Apartment and that her children were hiding in the bathroom. Police spoke to the man and the pair agreed to separate for the night.

Cry For Help

  • At 4:53, officers answered a call about an attempted suicide on Mabert Road. The caller said the victim cut his wrist. Police located the victim and Portsmouth Fire Department transported him to the hospital.
  • A crisis center called the police at 12:43 pm and asked them to check on a man who walked away from the center. Police found the man and talked to him. They said he seemed fine.

Crashing into a Cruiser

A vehicle heading west on Gallia crashed into a police cruiser just before 7 pm. Police said the road needed to be salted.

Hey! That’s My Stuff

  • Police responded to Thomas Avenue just before 8 am for a report of a break-in at a construction trailer. They took information for a report.
  • About 5 minutes later, maintenance workers reported damage to the laundromat in Wayne Hills.
  • Thieves hit Community Action once again at 10:47 am. This time they took a catalytic converter from a vehicle parked at the Welcome Center.

Keep Out

  • At 10 am, police met with a maintenance man at Farley Square to check on a guy who refused to leave an apartment he’d been evicted from. Police told the man to leave and not return.
  • A 6th Street caller reported people going in and out of a condemned home at 1913 6th Street. Police said that the Health Department needed to condemn and board up the residence to keep people out.

Don’t Pee On The War Memorial

Officers answered a call to Tracy Park at 1:25 pm for a report of a man acting crazy. Witnesses reported the man took off his shirt. Police arrived to find a man they have nearly daily contact with. They told him to put his shirt back on and leave the park.

At 1:50, officers were called back to Tracy park for a report of a man urinating in the bushes near the war memorial. Police took him into custody. The jail said they would accept him as long as he was cleared medically.

Repeat Offender

At 1:35 pm, police responded to a call regarding another man they have almost daily contact with. He was at the Wendy’s on Gallia making obscene gestures.

Please Support This Local Business

Employees reported he was rude to them and bumming money from customers. They said he was currently in the bathroom. The man left before the police arrived.

Shots Fired

At 6: 39 pm, an Auburn Avenue caller reported several gunshots in the area. About 20 minutes later, another caller said he also heard the shots and saw 2 men and a woman take off down the alley.

Witnesses said six shots were fired. Police made entry into an Auburn Avenue home but found no one injured.

Sex Offender Refuses To Leave

Police responded to the homeless shelter at the armory at 9:40 pm for a report of a disturbance. The shelter asked a man to leave because he was a registered sex offender. He also had warrants.

The man refused to leave and began to cry and scream in protest. Officers spoke to the man and he agreed to leave. They advised him not to return.
