Jackson County Sheriff Tedd Frazier warned citizens to be careful of a company that offers online certification for Ohio Concealed Carry permits.
Frazier said, “It has been brought to my attention that the National Conceal Academy is claiming that they provide official online certification for multi-state concealed carry permits. This type of certification DOES NOT follow the Ohio Concealed Carry License requirements.”
There’s a Catch
I checked out a site called the National Carry Academy online. When you check the fine print, even they admit that they aren’t promising that folks who complete their training will get a permit.
The cost of their online course is $69. When the course is completed, you will be eligible to apply for a Virginia non-resident conceal carry license. There’s an additional $100 fee to Virginia to apply. NCA’s theory is that many states reciprocate licenses.

While residents of Ohio can apply for their Ohio carry permit/license with the local Sheriff, Ohio does not issue carry permit/licenses to non-residents.

Requirements
Ohio residents must be 21 and complete an in-person 8-hour firearms safety training course that is “Offered by or under the auspices of a national gun advocacy organization.” The County Sheriff’s office issuing the license decides if the organization qualifies. In this case, it’s pretty clear that this type of certification would not pass muster in Jackson County.
Other acceptable forms of training for Concealed Carry are:
- Public classes approved by the Ohio Peace Officer Training Association offered by law enforcement agencies, colleges, or firearms training school.
- Proof that you are an active, reserve, or honorable discharged member of the armed forces with firearms training.
- Are a retired law enforcement officer with firearms training.
- You have successfully completed the Ohio Peace Officer Training Program.
