Labor Day didn’t go quite as planned for one would-be thief, who police say tried to snag more than $650 worth of groceries and alcohol from Walmart — but ended up leaving behind something much more personal.
The New Boston Police Department decided to have a little fun with the incident on Facebook, posting a tongue-in-cheek message to the suspect, identified as Missy P. (Starr).
Their post read:
“Sorry Missy Petrie (Starr) for ruining your Labor Day festivities. While you were attempting to steal over $650 worth of groceries/alcohol from Walmart, you dropped your backpack that contained two of your personal diaries and family photos while you were fleeing on foot. You’re more than welcome to stop at the New Boston Police Department and pick up those items at anytime if you choose. Have a Happy and Safe Labor Day!”
Ouch. Not only did she allegedly leave without the booze, but she also gave police a scrapbook of evidence that basically screams: “Yep, that’s me.”
A Word of Warning for Shoplifters 🚨
We cover a lot of Walmart theft stories here at SCDN, and they almost always end the same way:
🎥 Caught on Camera: Stores are packed with high-definition cameras. Many now use AI software that flags suspicious behavior.
🛍️ Trained Eyes: Asset Protection staff are everywhere, watching for people who think they’re being “sneaky.”
🚔 Fast Response: Police work hand-in-hand with Walmart, meaning an officer can be on-site in minutes.
🤦 Embarrassing Mistakes: Dropping your diary while running away is just the cherry on top.
The Takeaway
If you’re thinking about making a five-finger discount run at Walmart, you might want to think again. Between the tech, the staff, and the cops waiting outside, the odds are never in your favor. And if you do try it, at least don’t drop your diary.
