Portsmouth Police are investigating a frightening incident after a 16th Street grandmother called 911 to say a boy had opened fire on her grandson near their apartment.
The 911 Call
The caller told dispatchers she didn’t know the shooter’s name or where he ran after the shots were fired. Officers quickly responded to the area while dispatchers gathered additional details.
Witness Account
A witness provided a first name for the suspect and described him as wearing a black jacket with the hood up, gray jeans, a ski mask, and a fanny pack. The witness also said the suspect chased the victim before pulling out a firearm and shooting.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported. The witness told officers he knew the suspect through school at Portsmouth High School.
Prior Trouble at Address
Dispatch also noted that multiple calls had previously been logged at the juvenile suspect’s address, suggesting a pattern of problems at that location.
Police Response
Officers headed to the suspect’s residence, where they detained a juvenile and impounded evidence. A search warrant was obtained to gather further information related to the case. Police then transported the suspect to the station for questioning.
