Ohio is amping up the fight against those annoying robocalls that keep on coming. According to the government, half of all phone calls made in the United States are robocalls, many of them scams. An estimated 60 billion of them pestered Americans last year. A whopping 2.2 billion of them targeted Ohioans.
Now, Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost has announced a special Robocall Enforcement Unit for the state along with a new way to file complaints against robocallers.
“Ohioans are tired of playing defense against annoying robocalls,” Yost said. “Now it’s Ohio’s turn to play offense – and we need your help.”
The new unit will have investigators and attorneys. The investigators will work to track where the calls are coming from. Attorneys will work to take legal action against the companies behind them.
You’ll be able to easily report annoying calls by texting ROBO to 888111. After sending the text, you’ll answer a few simple questions. Yost says it should take under a minute. You can also file a complaint at OhioProtects.org or call 1-800-282-0515.
The AG’s office says you should always hang up when you receive a robocall. Don’t interact with them in any way. Never provide any information in response to a call. If your phone provider offers spam call blocking services, take advantage of them.
