One minute you’re driving, the next you’re sinking! A Portsmouth driver got the shock of her life when her white Lincoln plunged into a sinkhole at Coles Blvd and Brant Avenue!
Miraculously, she escaped without injury and even managed to drive her vehicle home, but the gaping hole left behind has residents fuming over the city’s crumbling roads/
Officers rushed to the scene and stood guard over the hole, keeping others from falling victim until Portsmouth City Service arrived to put up barricades. The sewer department also placed a warning sign over the hole—but since it was almost 5 p.m., workers said their supervisor would check it out in the morning. Let’s hope it doesn’t swallow anyone else overnight!
What Causes Sinkholes—and Could You Be Next?
Sinkholes form when underground water erodes soil and rock, creating an empty space beneath the surface. Eventually, the ground above collapses under its own weight, forming a sinkhole! Heavy rain, leaking pipes, and old sewer systems can make things worse.
How to Avoid a Sinkhole Disaster:
- Watch for warning signs: Cracks in roads, sinking pavement, and sudden potholes can mean trouble.
- Report issues: If you see a suspicious dip in the road, call city services before disaster strikes.
- Be cautious: Avoid driving through large puddles or soft pavement, as they could be hiding danger below!
What to Do if You Encounter a Sinkhole:
Stay back! Sinkholes can grow without warning.
- Call 911 or local authorities immediately.
- Warn others and keep the area clear until help arrives.
With Portsmouth roads already a mess, could more sinkholes be lurking beneath our feet? Drive safe—and keep your eyes on the road!
