A concerned family member may have just helped stop a potential predator in his tracks after reporting suspected child pornography discovered on a shared tablet.Â
The man walked into the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office lobby this week with a serious allegation — and a tablet in hand. He told deputies he’s been living with his aunt, her boyfriend, and other family members, but recently noticed suspicious behavior from the boyfriend, prompting him to take a closer look at the boyfriend’s Apple iPad.Â
What he allegedly found? Pornographic material he believed involved children.Â
He told officers he had been watching the man for nearly a week and observed him frequently using the tablet to view disturbing content, quickly hiding the screen and retreating to the bathroom when he noticed anyone watching. He eventually retrieved the device from where it was stashed under the dining room table.Â
The man also said the suspect is already under investigation for allegedly inappropriately touching the children of another relative — a detail law enforcement later confirmed.Â
The tablet is now in the hands of investigators, and the case has been officially opened.Â
🛑 What to Do If You Suspect Child Pornography or AbuseÂ
- Don’t ignore your instincts.
If something seems off — especially when kids are involved — pay attention. Unusual behavior around devices or secretive actions are red flags worth noting. - Do NOT confront the person directly.
It can put you or others in danger, or cause them to destroy potential evidence. Go straight to law enforcement. - Preserve the evidence, but don’t dig.
If you find a suspicious device, don’t continue browsing through it — that could compromise the case or violate the law. Instead, secure the device and turn it over to authorities immediately, just like the concerned man in this case. - Know the signs of grooming and abuse.
Watch for adults who spend excessive time alone with children, discourage private conversations from being shared, or show an unusual interest in one particular child. - Protect the kids and speak up.
You don’t need to have hard proof to raise a concern. Law enforcement can investigate — and should.
👏 The Sheriff’s Office praised the man for stepping forward and doing the right thing. The case remains open and under investigation.Â
If you believe a child is being exploited or abused — or you’ve discovered inappropriate content — call local law enforcement immediately or contact the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (1-800-THE-LOST).Â
Sometimes, doing the uncomfortable thing is what saves a child. Don’t stay silent.Â
