A routine school day at an area high school took an unexpected turn when a student’s emotional outburst disrupted the front office, leaving administrators and staff visibly shaken and prompting a response from law enforcement.
While assisting with a school detail at South Point Local Schools, a deputy was called to the high school principal’s office. As the deputy spoke on the phone with the principal, the sound of a male student yelling could be heard in the background. Upon arrival, the deputy encountered a visibly tense atmosphere, with school administrators and staff unsettled by the situation.
The student at the center of the incident was discovered in an assistant principal’s office, shouting into his phone—presumably speaking with his mother. His raised voice and use of profanities were loud enough to be heard throughout the hallway, contributing to a climate of unease among those in the vicinity.
The deputy entered the office and attempted to de-escalate the situation. After a tense moment, the student began to calm down. His mother, who was unable to leave work, gave the deputy permission over the phone to transport him home. Before leaving, school officials presented the student with disciplinary paperwork outlining the consequences of his actions.
According to school administrators, the situation began earlier during lunch dismissal. Staff had implemented a new hallway traffic procedure to limit congestion near the gym and stage. The student in question, along with a few others, reportedly ignored the new protocol and entered the gym—a space temporarily unsupervised while medical staff conducted sports physicals.
When a school official attempted to address the violation and explain the reasoning behind the restrictions, the student became defiant and disrespectful. The official then escorted him to the front office for a more private discussion, but the student’s behavior rapidly deteriorated. He called his mother, demanded to be picked up immediately, and began exhibiting behavior described by staff as erratic, belligerent, and potentially threatening.
Staff members in the office expressed concern that the student might become violent, noting that he appeared inconsolable and unpredictable. The administrator involved documented the incident thoroughly, including collecting witness statements from others present during the outburst. Ultimately, the school official indicated a desire to pursue charges of menacing, citing the student’s intimidating comments.
After reviewing the witness statements, the responding deputy noted that while there may not have been a clear, direct threat that met the legal threshold for menacing, the case would be forwarded to the county prosecutor for further review.
The student was transported home without further incident, and the deputy returned to the school to continue the detail. The situation remains under review, with potential disciplinary and legal consequences pending.
