Local citizens called the police after they felt companies ripped them off over the weekend.
A tanning salon customer contacted PPD just after 10 am to claim the business made a large unauthorized withdrawal from her bank account.
She admitted she’d set up an automatic payment plan with the business but said she hadn’t been in since July. She said for several months, the businesses charged the account, but her bank declined the transaction. The missed payments accumulated, and a charge for $160 went through all at once.
Police advised her this was not a criminal matter and that she should contact the salon to request a refund. If they refused, she had the option to take them to court.
Just after noon, a man came into the Portsmouth Police Department to claim an area construction company agreed to fix his roof but never showed up, even though he paid $500 upfront. He said he’d contacted the business owner, who said he’d either do the work or give back his money.
