Portsmouth police were alerted just after 9 a.m. when a local taxi company reported that one of their drivers and a vehicle had not returned from a fare. The driver had last been seen behind the wheel of a 2010 Town & Country, with the most recent ride logged around 2 a.m. in Wheelersburg.
Officers quickly took down the description and issued a “Be On the Lookout” (BOLO) alert to surrounding counties at 9:57 a.m. The effort to locate the missing cab driver, however, came to a sudden halt only ten minutes later.
A detective from the Scioto County Sheriff’s Office contacted Portsmouth police to report that the driver had already been found earlier in the morning at a Wheelersburg apartment. A call to county 911 at 4:45 a.m. had reported an unresponsive person, and despite emergency response, the individual was declared deceased at the scene.
The Sheriff’s Office is handling the investigation. Officials say next of kin have been notified and that no foul play is suspected.
