Chaos on 8th Street Ends with Arrest After Dog Attack
A dog bite at the 8th Street Homeless Shelter led to police lights, sirens, and a juvenile in handcuffs on Sunday.
Emergency crews rushed to the scene after a report that a toddler was bitten on the arm by a dog. EMS was initially dispatched, but the child’s mother opted to drive the injured toddler to the hospital herself, canceling the ambulance.
Meanwhile, Portsmouth Police took a juvenile suspect into custody in connection with the incident. The teen was transported to the station, but later released to their mother at King’s Daughters Urgent Care, where the injured child was being treated.
Shelter, But Not Always Safe
The bite raises serious questions about safety protocols at local shelters, especially when children and animals are living in close quarters.
No details have been released yet about the breed of the dog or whether the animal has been quarantined for observation. Authorities have not said if charges will be filed.
🧒 What to Do If a Dog Bites a Child:
- Seek immediate medical attention — even small bites can lead to infection.
- Report the bite to local animal control and police.
- Try to identify the dog’s owner and vaccination status.
- If the bite happens at a public facility like a shelter, request an official incident report.
As shelters become more crowded, especially during tough economic times, tensions and risks like these only grow. This incident serves as a stark reminder that more oversight and support may be needed where vulnerable populations gather.
