Lost 4-year-old found at local carryout — woman pleads no contest, receives jail sentence and probation
Just after 1 p.m., employees at the Oasis carryout on 17th Street got a shock when a young boy, around 4 years old, showed up all alone and gave his name. Concerned for the child’s safety, staff quickly called 911 and kept an eye on him until police arrived.
Officers responded and took the boy a few blocks away to Thomas Avenue to take his statement. During the investigation, they arrested a woman connected to the incident.
Authorities have now confirmed that Nancy Drennen, 59, was the woman taken into custody.
She later pleaded no contest in Portsmouth Municipal Court and was sentenced to 61 days in jail, with 60 of those days suspended. Drennen also received a fine, suspended court costs, and will be on probation for three years.
While specific details of the incident remain limited, the quick response of bystanders and police helped ensure the child’s safety — and brought swift action in court.
