First responders sprang into action when a 2-year-old was reported missing in Scary Hollow just after noon. The child’s grandmother told officers the toddler was last seen on the road across from her house heading into the woods.
South Point Police deployed a drone, and Boyd County, Kentucky, officers brought a K9 to help track the tot. The dog followed the child’s scent up into the woods but eventually lost it.
Multiple deputies hit the ground and climbed through the hills in search of the child. A deputy thought he heard the child make a noise and climbed through the dense brush down into a ravine before finding the child stuck in a thicket of briars.
Once the officer radioed the child’s location, another officer suggested calling 911 from the officer’s Apple Watch so other officers could pinpoint the location precisely with GPS.
The child was soaking wet and cold but appeared to have sustained only scratches and minor injuries. Searchers, officers, and the child’s father soon arrived at his location, and they hiked back to waiting ATVs. Lawrence County EMS checked out the boy.
The toddler had traveled around 800 yards, but he’d become stuck in dense brush in a ravine at the neighbor’s house.
