Officers found themselves in the middle of a bizarre insurance situation. A woman called the Sheriff’s Office to make a criminal damaging complaint.
When officers responded to the Proctorville home, the owner told them that the April tornadoes damaged her roof.
She contacted a roofing company to inspect the severely damaged roof and filed a claim with her insurance company. The company sent an adjuster and an engineer to inspect the roof. The engineer concluded that the damage was the result of vandalism. That’s when the woman’s insurance company insisted that she must file a police report before they would pay the claim.
The officer told the woman they wouldn’t file a criminal damaging report since you can’t charge a tornado. However, they did provide an informational report for her to submit to the insurance company.
