Summer has a history of proving to be the deadliest season for Scioto County drivers and the Ohio State Patrol issued a warning that the worst could be yet to come. Last year during the period between Memorial Day and Labor Day, there were 426 crashes in Scioto County. That was more than three times the crashes in neighboring Adams and Pike Counties, more than double than Jackson County, and nearly 200 more crashes than Lawrence County.
Troopers say they refer to the period as the 100 Deadliest Days of Summer. Statewide, there were 67,305 crashes during this period last year, nearly 400 of them fatal.
More than half of all motorcycle crashes occur during this period. Despite motorcycle only accounting for 3% of crashes, they caused nearly one-third of the fatalities.
Governor Mike DeWine encouraged drivers to be careful and stay sober. “As we enjoy the summer months, it’s important to prioritize safety on our roads,” said Governor Mike DeWine. “By committing to wearing a seatbelt, avoiding distractions, and driving sober, drivers can help prevent unnecessary tragedies.”
Troopers also warned against speeding. They said that more than 1200 drivers were cited last summer going over 100 mph on Ohio roads and that 4,500 drunk drivers were arrested.
