First responders were called to assist a man in a wheelchair twice in one night—though it’s unclear if it was the same individual in both incidents.
The first call came from Gallia and Murray Streets, where witnesses reported a man lying in the street after flipping his wheelchair. When police and EMS arrived, the man explained he lost control due to a bump in the sidewalk but assured them he was uninjured. After a quick check, he continued on to his father’s house nearby.
Just after midnight, a second call came in—this time about an older man with one leg stumbling down 7th Street and trying to get into cars. When officers arrived, they discovered the man had fallen out of his wheelchair and was struggling to get back up. EMS transported him to the hospital for treatment.
Authorities have not confirmed whether both calls involved the same individual or if two separate wheelchair users had accidents on Portsmouth streets that night.
How to Help Someone Back Into a Wheelchair Safely
If you see someone who has fallen from a wheelchair, follow these steps to assist safely:
✅ Ask Before Acting – Always check if they’re injured and how they’d prefer to be helped.
✅ Check for Injuries – If they’re in pain or disoriented, call 911 before moving them.
✅ Secure the Wheelchair – Lock the brakes and move footrests out of the way.
✅ Guide Them Up Carefully – If they can move independently, help them roll onto their side, then onto hands and knees before pushing up.
✅ Provide Support, Not Force – Stand behind them and support under their arms, avoiding pulling on their limbs.
If they can’t get up safely, it’s best to call for professional medical assistance.
Portsmouth first responders remain ready to assist those in need, whether from accidents, medical emergencies, or unexpected falls. If you see someone struggling, don’t hesitate to call for help. 🚑
