Two Ohio women, Karen Casbohm, 63, and Loreen Bea Feralo, 55, face charges in Ashtabula for gross abuse of a corpse and theft from a person in a protected class, according to records from Ashtabula Municipal Court.
The investigation started when two women left an unidentified body at the Ashtabula County Medical Center emergency room, triggering an alert to the police. Later, one of the women contacted the hospital, identifying the deceased as 80-year-old Douglas Layman of Ashtabula.
Officers visited Layman’s residence and spoke with Casbohm and Feralo. The pair claimed to have found Layman deceased earlier at their shared home. Allegedly, aided by a third unnamed individual, they placed Layman’s body in the front seat of his car and drove to a bank, where they withdrew funds from his account.
Ashtabula Police Chief Robert Stell stated that Layman’s body was positioned visibly in the vehicle to facilitate the withdrawal, a practice reportedly permitted by the bank in previous instances when they brought the body of Mr. Layman along for the ride.
