**We have an encouraging update in the recovery of Scioto County Commissioner Cathy Coleman—**her granddaughter reports that she has been moved to a step-down room as her condition continues to improve.
“Because she is doing so good (THANK THE LORD), they have moved her to a step-down room where she does not have to be monitored so closely,” the update reads. “Her new room number is 545 for the people who want to send things to her. If you have already sent things to 717, that’s OK! All deliveries have to be stopped and checked in at the front desk, so she will still get it ❤️”
This welcome news comes just days after Coleman was seriously injured in a head-on crash in Kentucky that left her with multiple traumatic injuries. The community’s prayers and messages of support have not let up—and now, they’re beginning to see those prayers answered.
The accident occurred last Thursday evening at a malfunctioning traffic light near New Boston, when Commissioner Coleman, 71, was struck by a truck while en route to get ice cream and Big Boy for her dog, Packer—who tragically did not survive the crash.
Family members described her injuries as severe: eight broken ribs, a punctured lung, a shattered femur with an open wound, a broken hand, and lacerations from head to toe. She also suffered a concussion and was knocked unconscious in the wreck. Due to poor weather conditions, she could not be life-flighted from the scene and was instead taken to Grant Medical Center in Columbus, where she underwent emergency surgery.
“She is one very loved lady, that’s for sure,” said one family member on social media. “We are getting bombarded with everyone’s prayers, love, and support.”
The Scioto County Commissioners’ Office confirmed the incident in a statement posted Friday morning:
“It is our sad duty to share that Commissioner Cathy Coleman was in a car accident yesterday evening. She was transported to Columbus and is undergoing treatment for her injuries. We ask for all of Scioto County to join us in praying for her full recovery. #PrayForCathy”
As the community mourns the loss of her beloved companion and continues to hope for her full healing, this latest update is a bright spot in an otherwise painful week.
“She still has a long recovery ahead,” said another relative. “But by the grace of God, she is alive—and we are so grateful.”
Cards, flowers, and well-wishes for Commissioner Coleman can now be directed to Room 545 at Grant Medical Center.
