How to Make a Care Package

Learn about what's actually useful for homeless people

Today I’m going to be talking about how to make a care package. I first started doing this when I got my car a few years ago. I would always see people in need, but I don’t tend to carry a ton of cash on me, so I started making care packages instead. Here is a quick little guide on how to make one

These are pretty small and won’t take up much room in your car. You can keep one in your center console or glove box so that they are easily accessible when you’re driving. So, let’s get started.

A bag
-this can be whatever you have lying around
– I have a ton of reusable grocery bags and drawstring bags, but a Ziploc works just fine

Socks
-Several interviews were done with people living without housing have found that socks are the most sought after item. Especially in the winter months, when it can be freezing cold outside, some nice socks are good for keeping the hands and feet warm.

Granola bar/foods that can last a while/packaged food
– Because they have nowhere to preserve their food, things like granola bars are great
– easy to carry, nutritional value, don’t go bad super quickly

Unscented lotion/ hand sanitizer
– little things that I get when I go to hotel rooms I always try to save for this purpose
– people who don’t have a dependable place to shower still need to stay clean
– small hand sanitizers and lotion can be great
-The reason I say unscented is because those also tend to be more hypoallergenic

Ponchos
– these ones you may not have lying around the house
– not super expensive, and again with the weather they can be super helpful
-relatively inexpensive

Hand Warmers
– small and portable
– even the cheaper ones can last up to 8 hours
– one of the biggest killers of people living without a home is hypothermia

Bottled water
– reusable and helpful
– dehydration is super common in the winter because people don’t realize they’re thirsty

Coupons/meal vouchers
– can find a lot of these on receipts or things like that
– save up the ones that you may not use and make a little bundle out of them
– for those who are wary of giving money, these can allow you to help with purchases, but also ensure that you’re money is not going towards something you may not want it to

Hand warmers, chapstick, poncho, deodorant, plastic combs, toothbrushes

Hopefully, this was helpful! That’s all for now, see you soon Scioto County Daily News!
